For the last 34 years, the City of Owen Sound has hosted the Festival of Northern Lights each year from late November to the beginning of January.

This magical Christmas event has been entertaining young and old alike with nearly 400 displays and 25 kilometers of illuminations along the Owen Sound Riverfront and at Harrison Park.

Each night after the opening ceremonies the lights are on from 5-10 pm for all to enjoy.

For as far back as I can remember we have had a long-lasting family tradition of viewing the Christmas lights.  In my early years, my parents would bundle my sister and I up on Christmas Eve and we would all get into the car and drive to see the spectacular home light displays that my parents had previously searched out. Since the start of the northern lights festival in 1987, that has been the family tradition of viewing the Christmas lights.

It is truly one of the highlights of the Holiday Season, walking along the riverfront and enjoying the lights with a cup of warm cocoa. Seeing the delight of the young children as they pick out their favourite characters, move to the musical displays, and point to the various moving parts. Oh, the joy it brings to both the young and the young at heart!

Take the time to witness the Festival of Northern Lights. It is the perfect location for a romantic night on the town, or to watch your children or grandchildren experience the lights for the first time.
